Description of the collection
In 1944 Radio Oranje called upon the Dutch to collect material concerning the war. After the liberation this call was repeated with a request to send all material to the RIOD, which had been founded on May 8, 1945. Among the material thus collected were Dutch proclamations and posters.
In 1983 the Koninklijke Bibliotheek received a request from the RIOD to take over the collection because they did not have satisfactory storage conditions. It was decided to transfer the collection to the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, where the posters were repaired and properly stored. Some 800 posters remained behind at the RIOD, where they are available for exhibitions. The posters in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek are regarded as a deposit collection and they are only occasionally available for loans.
Three genres may be distinguished: announcements from official bodies such as mobilization orders, reports of the capitulation and proclamations of the occupying forces; information posters urging the population to act in particular ways, such as posters against the black market or certain dietary habits in times of food shortage; and propaganda and recruitment posters.
