The first scholar the KB and NIAS received was Peter Burke. He was a fellow from February till April 2005. Peter Burke (1937) is Emeritus Professor of Cultural History and a fellow of the University of Cambridge. He is an internationally renowned scholar who is best known for his research on cultural history.
Burke is the author of many books, for example Venice and Amsterdam: a Study of Seventeenth-Century Elites, History and Social Theory and The European Renaissance. During his fellowship Burke focused on the history of translations in early modern Europe, especially on Dutch translations of historical books in the period 1500-1750.

Lecture
Peter Burke presented his fellowship research in the lecture Lost (and found) in translation: the case of early modern Europe. Burke gave an overview of traditions of translations in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, especially Dutch translations of historical books. He illustrated his theory with several case studies of translations in the early modern period.
