Robert Darnton was a fellow at KB and NIAS from June till August 2006. He researched part of the enormous collection French eighteenth century books and pamphlets. Darnton (1939) is an Emeritus Professor of Princeton University and Professor at the Carl H. Pforzheimer University and also Director of the Harvard University Library.
He is an authority in the fields of modern book history. His speciality is European history and specific the literary history of the French Revolution. His most important books are The Business of Enlightenment: A Publishing History of the Encyclopédie, 1775-1800, The Kiss of Lamourette: Reflections in Cultural History and The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Prerevolutionary France.

Lecture

Darnton concluded his fellowhip with a lecture about marquis De Pelleport, a leading French ‘libelliste’ who had to pay for his writings with a temporary stay in the Bastille-prison. In his lecture Darnton described his research on De Pelleport and his forbidden eighteenth century novel Les Bohémiens.

Publication

Publisher Bert Bakker and the KB produced the first public edition of the forbidden book Les Bohémiens. For the very first time, the novel is publically available and even translated into Dutch.

Dossier
