Lisa Jardine will take up the KB-fellowship from September until December 2008. Jardine combines a scientific career with strong public profile in the English media. She is a Professor Renaissance Studies at the Queen Mary University of London and Director of the AHRC Research Centre for Editing Lives and Letters. Jardine is an authority in the field of the intellectual history of the Renaissance and early modern Cultural History. In 1976 she was chosen as the first female fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge. She is a Honorary Fellow of King’s College at the same university. Among other things, Jardine published books on Erasmus, Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Christopher Wren, Robert Hooke, the rise of science in Europe en feministic critics on Shakespeare.
Her latest publication appeared in 2008: Going Dutch : How England plundered Holland's Glory. In this book Jardine aims to show the Dutch influence on culture and politics in Great-Britain in the seventeenth century. She sees a pivotal role for Constantijn Huygens in this respect, and her research at the KB will centre on the large collection of Huygens material the KB holds.
Lecture
Lisa Jardine will end her fellowship with the public lecture Constantijn Huygens, Fixer or Polymath. Jardine will not only describe Huygens’ diplomatic works , but also his literary, musical and scientific activities. The lecture will be held on 4 December 2008 at the KB.
Dossier
