Typographer and publisher Robin Kinross will hold the KB-fellowship from February through June 2009. Kinross is primarily known for his ground-breaking work on Western typography, Modern Typography, published in 1992.
In this work he placed typography in a broader cultural context instead of just concerning himself with the letter types. During his fellowship he will apply this broad view of typography as a cultural phenomenon to a specific subject: the paper which serves as the substratum for typography. He will concentrate on the development of standard sizes for sheets of printing paper, and so standard sizes for printed items such as books and stationery. In this, he aims to bring together the often separate disciplines of book history, paper history and typography. For his research, he will start with early printed books and the history of paper. The KB has important collections and expertise in both areas.
Lecture
