The Hague, September 1, 2010 - Historian Jo Tollebeek will be a fellow at Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Science this autumn. He is the seventh scholar of repute in the field of the humanities to be awarded the fellowship since 2005. During his tenure Tollebeek wishes to work on the origins of modern historiography. This was also the theme of his latest book Fredericq & Zonen (2008).
Jo Tollebeek is a professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. He focuses his research on the cultural history since 1750. He has published regularly on issues concerning the history of historiography, cultural history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the history of the Catholic University of Leuven. His debut was De toga van Fruin, on thinking about history in the Netherlands since 1860. He was one of the editors of De Palimpsest on Historiography in the Netherlands 1500-2000, which shows how the perception of the past has taken on new forms over time.
Tollebeek is looking forward to the opportunity to delve deeper into the collections of the Library and will only decide on theme of his lecture when he has had a chance to explore them further. He will report on this process in a blog on this website. He will also develop his research in the international and multidisciplinary environment of the NIAS in Wassenaar . Jo Tollebeek will present his findings in a final public lecture, which is organized in cooperation with NIAS and Historisch Nieuwsblad. This lecture will be held on January 27, 2011 in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and will be published by Bert Bakker Publishers. The NIAS provides an English translation.
After Robin Kinross, Lisa Jardine, Jonathan Israel, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Robert Darnton and Peter Burke Jo Tollebeek is the seventh leading researcher, who has been a Fellow at the KB and NIAS since 2005. The KB-fellowship is a joint venture between the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) - National Library of the Netherlands, and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS). The research facilities provided at both institutes allow the fellow to enjoy the best of both institutions: the KB's unique collections and expertise and NIAS' international and multidisciplinary environment.
