On this publication
Like many other log-books and travel reports, the journal of Jan Carstenszoon’s 1623 exploration of the Gulf of Carpentaria, then considered part of New Guinea, had remained unpublished in its own time. In the course of the 19th century the tendency in many disciplines to return to the original sources, resulted in the editing of many hitherto almost unknown texts. L.C.D. van Dijk (1824-1860) edited and annotated this journal, based on a handwritten copy, signed by Jan Carstensz
