The Journaal wegens een voyagie is nothing more and nothing less than the printed version of the log-book that was kept, anonymously, by one of the ship-officers on the hooker the Nyptang. It is a small, simple booklet of only 24 pages, published by a group of Amsterdam publishers. It was very common for publishers in these days to share the investment costs, risks and revenues of a publication. This group of booksellers co-operated quite often.
The commander of the expedition, Willem de Vlamingh, who sailed on the Geelvink, kept a log-book of this journey as well, but this was not given in print. (For more details, see W.C.H. Robert, The explorations, 1696-1697, of Australia by Willem de Vlamingh. Amsterdam, 1972.) Much more remarkable than the text itself or its outward appearance, is the fact that it was not published separately, but was incorporated in the edition of two imaginary (!) voyages on the South-land: viz. Dutch translations of Denis Vairasse, Histoire des Savarambes and Jaques Sadeur (pseudonym of Gabriel de Foigny), La terre australe connue. It must have been possible for an individual purchaser to buy just the Journaal wegens een voyagie…and nothing more, for it has its own title-page and its own pagination and signatures. However, the title-page of the Historie der Sevarambes clearly indicates that the journal of the Nyptang is an integrated part of this publication. The same goes for the Nieuwe reize na het Zuid-land (New voyage to the South-land) by Sadeur. In itself it is a very common phenomenon that different texts on related subjects were combined into one book. But this is a very rare example of the combination of imaginary voyages with a real travel account. And the presentation of the three texts together on the first title-page adds very much to the apparent reality of the fictitious travelogues.
