In order to help the programme committee create stimulating panel sessions, we should like to ask you to consider the following:
The working language of the conference is English.
The programme committee particularly welcomes panel proposals. These should show an obvious coherence. The programme committee will consider panels with priority, and may make suggestions for changes to any of the individual proposals.
Papers presented at SHARP conferences are expected to present original scholarship, and to go beyond the presentation of raw data, or of the basic materials found in research. Consider what the wider implications and possible conclusions are that may be drawn from the research?
Note that certain sessions may be designated for work in progress where few results may be available beyond initial raw data. If you feel that your paper would be best placed in a session where raw data and tentative findings may be presented for audience scrutiny, please state so in your proposal.
SHARP was conceived as an organization that crosses disciplinary boundaries. SHARP welcomes papers that manifest overlaps with other disciplines. However, all papers should give evidence of a solid book-historical underpinning.
Abstracts should indicate what thesis is being asserted, what the evidence will be, and how the proposed presentation impacts our understanding of some aspect of book history. Identify in one sentence the main thesis or question(s) your paper addresses. Also provide information about the context of your paper? (E.g., further evidence of an as yet insufficiently documented phenomenon; argument for the amplification or modification of a received paradigm; rebuttal of an accepted theory or notion, etc.)
Please consider the question why conference delegates would like to hear your paper. How does this study throw light on some issue, principle, or practice of book history? Which particular segment of the SHARP membership (discipline, area of interest, specialisation) do you expect to be interested in your paper? Please address these questions in your proposal.
A number of possible sessions have already been suggested on the SHARP-L discussion list. See the SHARP-L archive for these messages.
We prefer you to use one of the webforms provided for submitting your proposal. Should that be impossible, you can email us a Word-document, but please make sure that your proposal includes the same information in the same order as is required on the webform. This will facilitate selection and comparison.
