SHARP 2006

The 14th annual conference was organised by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands) in co-operation with the Universities of Leiden, Utrecht, Nijmegen and Amsterdam.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday the venue was held at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague; on Thursday at the University of Leiden.

Keynote speakers and masterclasses

SHARP 2006 was opened with a keynote speech by Robert Darnton (Slander: the Art and Politics of Vilification, Paris and London, 1770-1800) in Theatre Diligentia in The Hague. Other keynote speakers were Marika Keblusek and Peter Kornicki. Evening activities/receptions included the Peace Palace (The Hague) and the Rembrandt exhibition at the Lakenhal (Leiden).

On 11 July 2006 a Master Class in the History of the Manuscript and the Printed Book was planned in cooperation with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, National Library of the Netherlands, the Huygens Institute, the Huizinga Graduate School of Cultural History and the Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies. The Master Class consisted of two sections: Section I (pre-1800), by Prof. Gabriele Müller-Oberhäuser (University of Münster, Germany) and Section II (post-1800) by Prof. Jonathan Rose (Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, USA).

The conference 'Trading Books - Trading Ideas' highlighted the importance of the European and the North American heritage for the book and print cultures of the world. Special attention was paid to the history of the trade in books between Eastern and Western European countries, to mark the occasion of ten new Eastern member states joining the European Union on 1 May 2004.
