This paper asks the question - is there such a thing as preservation digitization? The paper will review the technical issues associated with reformatting library and archives material through microfilming and digitization and will include an overview of the technical processes for the creation of film and digital surrogates. What defines an appropriate surrogate for preservation purposes will be explored along with the significance of the environment for long-term retention and economic considerations. Debate will be encouraged.
