When films are used as substitutes of the original documents, the technical quality of a microfilm is very important. After filming, the original materials are supposed to remain in these repositories, and not to be consulted again. The high quality, that the Dutch preservation programme Metamorfoze requires for substitute microfilming, meant a major cultural change for the companies involved. They need to deliver a product of high technical quality rather than a just legible copy like they used to produce. In this sense substitute filming is a like a professional sport, demanding the utmost from operators and their cameras. Collection after collection, newspaper after newspaper.
