Summary

Library visitors do not like to use microfilms, the libraries dislike the machines in their reading rooms. Since the development of other conservation technologies, microform has become controversial. Initially microfilming was for preservation and digitization for access only. However, because of the problems concerning the preservation of born-digital material this orthodoxy is breaking down. Digitization for preservation has become an alternative to microfilming. The National Library of Australia is the first who started a digitization programme for preservation. These changes lead to a new complexity in the decision making process: preservation strategies are closely connected to other policy decisions in the library and require a holistic approach.
