Digitization projects are more complex with respect to planning and implementing than preservation microfilm projects. With substitution microfilming a collection as a whole will be put on microfilm, whereas collections do not necessarily need to be digitized in their totality. The purpose of accessibility can also be served via an apt selection. The combination of preservation via substitution microfilming and digitization to increase access offers considerable financial, organizational, practical and logistic advantages, in contrast to carrying out the two separately.
