ICABS
IFLA-CDNL Alliance for Bibliographic Standards

Based on a survey carried out by the KB among 15 national libries, the book Networking Digital Preservation. Current practice in 15 National Libraries was published in 2006 in the IFLA Publication Series.

RAND report on digital preservation
Archiving and preserving electronic scholarly publications and making them accessible for the long term is a key priority for the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. To provide a sound evidence base for this long-term strategy and analyse how to respond flexibly to a variety of possible future developments and events, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek has commissioned RAND Europe to analyse the Koninklijke Bibliotheek’s e-Depot strategy.

File Format research
The KB has begun research into file formats. File formats describe the manner in which information in a computer file is encoded.

DARE: Digital Academic Repositories
DARE’s aim is to store the results of all Dutch research in a network of repositories, in which the National Library fulfils the role of safe place in charge of digital preservation.

TIFF-archive
In 2004-2005 the Research and Development division executed the pilot project National Digital Repository Service for Image Material, also called pilot Tiff-Archive. The goal was to gain insight into the technical and functional possibilities, costs, feasibility and desirability of a national digital repository at the KB.

Universal Virtual Computer (UVC) for images
Together with IBM Netherlands, the KB has developed a new preservation strategy, based on the Universal Virtual Computer (UVC). With the UVC it is possible to read files without adapting them and without the original hardware or software.

Preservation Manager
In 2003 the National Library (KB) started developing a Preservation Subsystem for the e-Depot, based on the KB/IBM report Preservation requirements in a deposit system. This system consists of a Preservation Manager, a Preservation Processor and tools for permanent access. The Preservation Manager uses technical metatadata to manage and control the long-term preservation of the digital objects stored in the e-Depot.

PREMIS
In 2001-02, OCLC and RLG convened an expert working group to consider the types of information falling within the scope of preservation metadata. The group's efforts culminated in the public release of a comprehensive metadata framework describing the information necessary to carry out, document, and evaluate digital preservation processes.

NEDLIB
The aim of NEDLIB was to construct the basic infrastructure upon which a networked European deposit library can be built. The objectives of Nedlib concur with the mission of national deposit libraries to ensure that electronic publications of the present can be used now and in the future.

BIBLINK
This project aimed to establish a relationship between national bibliographic agencies and publishers of electronic material in order to produce authoritative bibliographic information that will benefit both sectors.
