Digitization of Newspapers: The Roaring Twenties
Newspapers provide a rich and often used source of information of daily life, political developments, sporting events etc. Microfilm is being used as a preservation medium and to ensure access when the original material is considered to be too vulnerable. Within the framework of the national preservation programme, Metamorfoze, Dutch newspapers have been put on microfilm on a large scale. Microfilm is a reliable information carrier, but the readers employed to present the information are not considered to be user friendly. Digitization and the Internet provide possibilities to improve access to these important resources. In this project the advantages of microfilm (robust information carrier) and digitisation (improved access) are combined to provide access to Dutch newspapers from the period 1920-1930. Internationally there is not much experience in digitizing newspapers. The first phase of the project therefore consist of a survey of existing projects. A clear focus point for the study will be how the materials have been made available and what the options are to search the collections. In a second phase the material will be digitized and made available.
