Introduction

Digitization and providing access to books from the Special Collections of the university libraries of Amsterdam (UVA) and Leiden and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. The selection is made from books that have been included in the Short Title Catalogue of the Netherlands (STCN), ranging from 1781 to 1800.

Aims

The main aim of the project is to provide free and integral access to the selected books, of which all pages will be digitized. The total amount of pages to be digitized is 1.3 million. Users will be able to look for titles through a web service and search for every word in the text. The web service may be expanded in the future with more digitized books and new functionality.

Planning

The time to complete the project is 36 months. The project started on 1 May 2007. During the first phase the specifications for digitization are made and a European invitation to tender will be issued. Also the selection of the books and the material analysis will be initiated. In the second phase the digitization process will be carried out and the web service is scheduled to be developed. In 2010 the web service will be up and running.
