In his 79th year dr C. Reedijk, former librarian of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, deceased on 7 May 2000. Dr Reedijk studied classics and took his doctor’s degree in 1956 on the thesis The poems of Desiderius Erasmus.
During his librarianship (1962 to 1986) he piloted the KB into a new era by strenghtening its position as the national library of the Netherlands. Dr Reedijk was strongly involved in the foundation of the Depot of Dutch Publications in 1974, the Netherlands Bibliografic Centre and Pica, the Centre for Library Automation. His wisdom and his ability to bridge contrasting opinions were of great value to the Dutch library community. In the international library world Dr Reedijk played an important part as chair of IFLA’s 'Programme Development Group' and 'Section of National and University libraries'. As a scholar and a librarian dr Reedijk was highly esteemed and respected in the Netherlands and abroad.
