The Hague, 11 January 2007. Deputy Director of IOS Press BV, Popke Huizinga, and Wim van Drimmelen, Director General of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the National Library of the Netherlands, have signed an agreement about the long-term preservation of all electronic publications of IOS Press.

On the basis of this cooperation the Koninklijke Bibliotheek will receive digital copies of all e-journals and e-books of IOS Press to store these in KB’s e-Depot that has been operational since 2003 and is already containing over 8 million digital publications. The KB commits itself to ongoing investments and research into long-term preservation and access to all publications in the e-Depot, including all related bibliographic and technical data.

It is expected that IOS Press will deliver approx. 2,000 articles from its 80 e-journals and about 60 e-books on an annual basis. On top of that the entire back files of all journals will be added, amounting to an estimated 12,000 articles. Also more than 200 books which were previously published in print, will be made available in digital form and will become part of the e-Depot.

The KB will secure on-going access to all stored publications to its on-site users. The KB is a long established and highly regarded institution of great quality and reliability and an international authority in the area of digital repositories. Through this archiving agreement the KB will serve as as a guarantee and last resort to all international authors of and subscribers to IOS Press publications regardless future changes in rendition technology.

IOS Press is a scientific publisher that is strongly international oriented with its main office situated in Amsterdam. IOS Press hopes to celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2007. The publishing activities concentrate mainly in the field of computer sciences and medicine. IOS Press thus services a variety of scientific and medical communities in the United States, Europe and Asia. Scientific research institutes and university libraries form the majority of the customers of IOS Press.

The Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) is the National Library of the Netherlands and its mission is:

  • to give researchers and students access to research information
  • to enable everyone to share in the riches of our cultural heritage
  • to foster the national infrastructure for scientific information
  • to promote and support permanent access to digital information within an international context

In the framework of digital preservation of e-publications similar archiving agreements have already been signed by the KB (since 2002) with the following publishers: Elsevier, Kluwer Academic, BioMed Central, Blackwell Publishing, Oxford University Press, Taylor & Francis, Sage Publications, Springer and Brill Academic Publishers.
Furthermore a general arrangement between the KB and the Dutch Publishers Association (NUV) has been settled concerning the depositing of all e-publications with a Dutch imprint.
