History
The museum was founded in 1874 as the Historical Museum of the Royal Dutch Yacht-Club and became a municipal museum in 1880. The basis was laid by a collection of Prince Hendrik, one of the sons of king Willem II. In 1950 the museum acquired into permanent loan the 'Engelbrecht'-collection, consisting of maps, atlases, itineraries, books on navigation, etc. The collection passed into ownership in 1966. The collection of models and half-models of vessels numbers over 1,400. The collection contains a.o. also some 145,000 shipbuilders plans and 80,000 documentary photographs.

Contents
The collections consists of ca. 300 atlases, 2,500 printed maps and 34 globes, for 95% produced before 1800. The Engelbrecht collection consists of 2 ms. atlases, 90 land and 70 maritime atlases (e.g. all translations of Waghenaers Spieghel der Zeevaerdt), 25 rutters, 40 ms. maps (e.g. 8 maps of Bartlomeus Laso), 260 maps (e.g. 40 Venetian maps, including the 1546 worldmap of Gastaldi, and most of the Plancius maps) and 3 atlases-factice (ca. 200 maps). Further the Spanish edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1588) and Blaeu's Atlas Maior (1658-1672).
Other important items are Mercator's 1569 worldmap in the form of an atlas; a unique copy of W.J. Blaeu's 1640 worldmap and the revised edition of 1644/45 by Joan Blaeu.
In recent years the museum acquired ca. 1,500 Dutch and English admiralty charts, dating from the mid- nineteenth century to ca. 1950
Besides, the library contains many publications with aspects for the study of the history of cartography: itineraries, rutters, journals, ethnographical studies etc.
In the collection are also preserved the papers of F.C. Wieder.
