Collectie Bodel Nijenhuis (Dutch)

History
Besides normal acquisitions by the library the maps and atlases derived mainly from the purchase of the Vossius Library, the legacy of J.T. Bodel Nijenhuis and from what is called the Bibliothèque Japonaise.

Contents
The collection consists of ca. 40,000 maps (in ca. 60,000 sheets), including 3,000 ms. maps, ca. 1,000 atlases, ca. 24,000 topographical prints and drawings and 7 globes. We can discern the following special collections:
Vossius: 25 (mainly townbooks and maritme) atlases and 187 maps, of Italian origin (1544-1567), probably compiled in Southern Germany.
Bodel Nijenhuis: 100 atlases, ca. 38,000 maps and ca. 20,000 topographical prints and drawings. Included are 332 Van Keulen ms. maps.
Bibliothèque Japonaise: Atlases and maps of the world, 42 maps of Japanese provinces and 60 townplans, dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1959 the heirs of F.C. Wieder (see chapter 2) presented to the University Library of Leiden the documentation (20 boxes of references and 20 portfolios with reproductions and drawings) which he used in connection with his work for Youssouf Kamal's Monumenta Cartographica.
There is an extensive reference library in support of the history of cartography.

Regional emphasis is on The Netherlands (ca. 30%), East and West Indies (5%), France (5%), Belgium (4%), Germany and Austria (5%), other countries of Europe (30%), Asia, America, Africa.

Cataloguing
Maps and atlases which have been catalogued before 1990 are ordered in an area-catalogue and catalogue on personal names on catalogue cards.
Since 1990 maps and atlases are being catalogued in the Pica-system (see chapter 5). Every year the library receives list-output ordered on area and personal names.

Reproduction Xeroxcopies can not be made. Ektachromes, b/w photographs, colour slides and microfilm of both maps and atlas leaves can be supplied. Orders cannot be accepted by telephone.

Atlantes Neerlandici
The numbers relate to the "List of Dutch atlases and (partial) facsimiles thereof", primarily based on C. Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici.
