Map Room Library Vrije Universiteit (Dutch)

History
The map-collection started as part of the library of Social Geography and became an independent department in 1967. At present the map-collection is part of the department of Special Collections of the University Library.
Atlases published before 1800 are to be found in the department of Manuscripts and Old & Rare Books. The collection is used for teaching and research purposes within the university.

Contents
The collection can be characterized as a general collection containing maps and atlases of topographical as well as of thematic nature. Besides the collection contains some 3,500 titles concerning cartographic literature, regional and structural planning reports, guide books and gazeteers.
Presently the collection numbers more than 32,000 maps (ca. 600 before 1800, ca. 6,000 1800-1945), ca. 2,300 atlases, 173 wallmaps and 17 globes.

Special collections: - From the collection of the library of H. Bos: ca. 100 titles of cartographic literature and ca. 100 maps.
-Collection from the seminary-libraries of Hoeven and Wernhout.
Mainly geological material can be found in the Library of Earth Sciences (De Boelelaan 1083). This library department contains well over 20,000 maps and a small number of atlases.

The regional emphasis is on: The Netherlands; Western Europe; South-East Asia, Indonesia, China, India; Africa; Latin America.

Cataloguing
Titles of books, serials, as well as atlases are available on an OPAC. Searches are possible on author, (words from) titles, subject-codes, subjects etc. A seperate area-card-catalogue is used for maps.

Reproduction
In the reading room there are 2 illuminated drawing tables.
The making of xeroxcopies is allowed under certain conditions. There are possibilities for making photographs, slides, transparencies of maps and atlas-leaves. Information on request.
