European digitized newspaper collections more accessible
18 million newspaper pages will be included in Europeana
The Hague,3 July 2012 -A group of 17 European partner institutions have joined forces in the “Europeana Newspapers” project to include more than 18 million newspaper pages in Europeana over the next three years. Europeana is a single access point to millions of digitised books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records sourced from throughout Europe.
Newspapers are an important part of library collections and are often consulted by a wide audience. Many libraries are therefore working to digitize and make available their newspaper material. However, the online access to these collections is still fragmented because of unsatisfactory OCR (Optical Character Recognition) results and problems with metadata and segmentation.
These and other challenges are now being tackled at a European level to make the newspaper collections more accessible. More than 18 million digitized newspaper pages will be added to Europeana, including a part of the historical newspaper material from the National Library of the Netherlands.
