This autumn at the KB
Although it’s still the height of summer, the KB already has loads of great events lined up. Curious about what’s on offer? Why not attend a KB lecture, for example, or listen to the discussions on the ‘On the Spot’ series? You can also participate in a workshop, and it is your final chance to see the Flora Mundi exhibition.
KB Lectures
Several KB Lectures will also be held this autumn. The KB Lecture on ‘Mass media and opinions: how printing and the internet mobilise people’ is scheduled to take place on Friday 11 September. Using examples from the pamphlet and web collections, this lecture explores how people are seizing the opportunities offered by technology to make their voices heard.
A month later, on Friday 9 October, we’ll delve into the KB’s old archives. The ‘From Dom Pedro to the Helleboek – a journey through the KB archives’ lecture introduces you to unique archival material dating back to the founding of the KB in 1798.
On Friday 13 November, the KB Lecture will focus on astrology. During the ‘Astrology in the KB Collection’ lecture, you’ll learn more about the study of celestial bodies and their influence on earthly events.
The Story Salon
Leanne Brand
Leanne Brand and Arne Braaksma will be our guests in The Story Salon on Tuesday 15 September. Brand will discuss her research into Dutch National Socialist newspapers during the final year of the war. During The Story Salon, she will show how these newspapers struck a balance between harsh reality and unwavering optimism.
In addition, Braaksma will talk about his two-part series Ontrafeling (Unraveling) and Het paleis der verwachting (The Palace of Expectations). The first part deals with the tension between the clock-based time of everyday life and the timeless nature of life’s big questions. The second part focuses on personal growth.
Workshop Creative Art journal
On Friday 18 September, journal enthusiasts are invited to the Workshop Creative Art Journal. First, a collage technique is explained. After that, participants will create their own personal and expressive pages in an art journal.
On the spot
Splinter Chabot
Jip van den Toorn, Israel van Dorsten, Sara Dubbeldam and Zoë Papaikonomou will be guests on the monthly On the Spot interview series. They will be talking with presenter Splinter Chabot.
The conversation with cartoonist Van den Toorn will focus on the power of imagery, her working methods and the role of satire. Van Dorsten will recount the gripping story of his escape from Ruinerwold. With Black Friday just around the corner, Dubbeldam will cover fashion activism, fast fashion and clothing awareness. Towards the end of the year, Papaikonomou will explore how power, language and equality are intertwined.
Closing of Flora Mundi
On Friday 25 September, the Flora Mundi exhibition will draw to a close with a double lecture. Maria Sibylla Merian and Berthe Hoola van Nooten are being put in the spotlight. These two remarkable women carved out a place of their own in the botanical illustration tradition.
