On Wednesday 3 December, the KB was one of the signatories at the founding of AI4LAM (Artificial Intelligence for Libraries, Archives and Museums). More than 40 heritage and knowledge institutions joined this initiative. Through this, the KB wants to contribute to safe, transparent and public-oriented AI applications for libraries, archives and museums.
AI4LAM
AI4LAM is an international cooperation between libraries, archives, museums and knowledge institutions. The network is aimed at developing and sharing responsible AI applications for the heritage field. With the signed Memorandum of Understanding, AI4LAM officially becomes an independent organisation.
The new agreement sets out how institutions will share knowledge, data and tools, and how they will collaborate on reliable and explainable AI. This will make the KB a national player that connects Dutch initiatives to international developments in artificial intelligence.
Searching made easier
The collaboration is intended to make it easier for visitors and researchers to find things. For instance, consider smarter search functions, automatic descriptions and other helpful tools. The KB is already experimenting with such applications, like a 'curator bot' that allows users to question books from the collection directly. There is also an exploration into the safe and responsible use of Large Language Models (LLMs).
Furthermore, the KB is working on data curation. This is a way to ensure information is linked to the correct data. That is important for things like preventing two writers with the same name being seen as one person, and it allows for automatic linking of different versions of the same digital title.
