During the past years a lot of material has been digitized with European and national funding, and much research went into software and services for improving the access to this material, for example in the IMPACT project for better OCR software. However, the results of such efforts often remain as working prototypes since their implementation in the production environment is hindered by the limited awareness of results and the lack of resources for their adaptation and development.

Several Centres of Competence have been started in Europe to solve this sustainability problem, such as the Open Preservatio Foundation for digital preservation and the IMPACT Centre of Competence in Digitization. The SUCCEED project (Support Action Centre of Competence in Digitisation) will help strengthen the infrastructure of Centres of Competence and support the European Commission in executing the Digital Agenda for Europe, especially in the area of digitization. The project will promote the take up and validation of research results in mass digitisation, with a focus on textual content, and work on achieving the following impacts:

  • Optimisation of digitisation resources through fostering pooling the efforts by cultural institutions, partnership (public/private sectors) and cross-border collaboration
  • Promotion of the use of common standards for digitisation tools and data
  • Sharing of best practices to set up Centres of Competence for European innovation & research and their business models, legal forms, implementation risks, funding opportunities, standardised governance models, contracts/license agreements
  • Definition of a roadmap towards a common infrastructure of Centres of Competence in the digital libraries research area
  • Raising awareness of results in the field by organising awards, contests and events, alongside a comprehensive dissemination strategy

SUCCEED started on 1 January 2013 and has a duration of two years. The University of Alicante leads the consortium of 9 partners. The KB leads the work on Interoperability and Infrastructure, building on the research done in IMPACT, and has an important contribution in the work on Roadmapping and Sustainability.
