History of the collection

Since its foundation, the KB has acquired materials for the collection of books by and about Benedict de Spinoza. The collection was significantly enlarged in 1870, 1871 and 1958 with a donation by mr. Adrianus Bogaers (1795-1870), the acquisition of the collection of dr. Antonius van der Lnde (1833-1897) and the bequest of the spinozist Willem Gerard van der Tak (1885-1958), respectively. J.M. Bogaers, the daughter and sole heir of the Rotterdam lawyer, poet and writer Adriaan Bogaers, gave the KB the first choice from the large library (10,000 to 12,000 volumes) of her father. It included Manuscript A, entitled Korte verhandeling van God, de mensch en deszelvs welstand.

Antonius van der Linde (1833-1897) collected rare and valuable works by and about Spinoza. He received his PhD in Göttingen in 1862 for a dissertation on Spinoza. He then worked on a biography of Spinoza (published in 1871), before selling his Spinoza collection to the KB. It ncludes many rare editions of Spinoza and the Dutch spinozists' works. Among the books was thhe other copy of the Korte verhandeling, manuscript B.

Van der Tak (1885-1958) was a board member of the Domus Spinozana Foundation. In his estate there was a collection of letters in connection with the Hague Spinozahuis. The letters were donated to the KB In 1958.
