Collection description

The collection of the composer, conductor and publicist Willem Pijper (1894-1947) was donated to the KB by his heirs in 1949. In later years many substantial extensions have been acquired, among which the correspondence with L.G.A. Bolleman (1976) and Pijperiana from the collection of Emmy van Lokhorst (1996).
As Pijper's house was completely destroyed by fire in the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940, there is no such thing as a "Pijper archive". Fortunately, however, the original scores of majority of Pijper's compositions survive. Consequently, they comprise the most important part of the collection. There is also an extensive collection of correspondence, although for obvious reasons there are very few letters received by Pijper before May 1940. Another important part of the collection consists of printed scores, programmes of performances of Pijper's compositions and their reviews, articles about him, and photographs. Besides, there are a few reviews by Pijper and some miscellanea, such as his tonometer and "Sinterklaas" verses he wrote. Special mention deserve the files concerning his operas Halewijn (e.g. a copy of the scores with directions, draft versions of the libretto, a sound-recording from 1937) and the unfinished Merlijn(correspondence with S. Vestdijk, different versions of the libretto, extensive notes).
