Contents of the ANP Radio News Bulletins collection

The ANP Radio News Bulletins collection contains 1.8 million sheets with typed out texts of radio news bulletins from the Dutch news agency Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP). They are the texts of radio news broadcasts that the newscasters read on the radio. Many pages also contain handwritten notes and instructions from the newsreaders.

The collection dates from the period 1937-1989. 1937 was the year the first news bulletins were broadcast on Dutch radio. 1989 was the year the ANP bulletins were first produced digitally.

The collection is not totally complete. The radio news bulletins from the early 1940s up to when the radio broadcasts ceased by order of the occupying forces can be found at the Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD) and the ANP. These have not been digitised. Many of the bulletins from the years immediately after the war, 1946-1949, are also missing.

History of the ANP Radio News Bulletins collection

The ANP Radio News Bulletins were discovered in a villa that once housed the ANP’s Radio News Service. When this building was emptied, 750 boxes containing a huge number of typed-out radio news bulletin texts were found in the basement. Staff of the Film and Science Foundation (Stichting Film en Wetenschap, SFW) in Amsterdam contacted the ANP Foundation, the official owner of the bulletins. The material was sent to the National Library of the Netherlands. In 2006, the KB decided to digitise the historical material and make it available online via Delpher.

Where can you find the ANP Radio News Bulletins?

The radio bulletins held by the KB have all been digitised. They can be searched on the digital platform Delpher. The paper originals cannot be viewed.
