Google Scholar is a dedicated search engine for academic texts. By changing a few settings in Google Scholar, you can immediately see whether your KB account gives you access to publications appearing in the search results. Here's how it works.
What is Google Scholar?
Google Scholar is a public search engine that anyone can use. Maybe you already do! In Google Scholar, you can search a wide range of sources and databases with just one search bar. You'll find references to books, articles and more. Google Scholar also has useful advanced search functions, such as sorting your results by date, searching in a particular language or only in a particular time frame. All these features make it a particularly useful research tool!
How do I link Google Scholar with the KB?
Create a link between Google Scholar and the KB in seven steps:
- Go to scholar.google.com
- Open the menu by clicking on the 3 horizontal lines, also known as the hamburger symbol (≡).
- Click on 'settings'.
- Click on 'library links'.
- Enter 'Koninklijke Bibliotheek' in the search bar and then click on the magnifying glass to search.
- 'KONINKLIJKE BIBLIOTHEEK - FullText@KB' will appear below the search bar. Tick this option.
- Click on 'save'. You have now set up a link.
The link is between Google Scholar and KB databases, so your KB account and the associated data will not be linked or shared with Google. Read Google's privacy policy to find out what data Google processes when you use their services.
Why should I link Google Scholar with the KB?
After setting up the link, you'll see the 'FullText@KB' link in your Google Scholar search results below texts that you can access via the KB. Simply click on the link to be redirected to the KB site. All you have to do is log in with your KB account to view the text.
In other words, setting up a link lets you search in Google Scholar and simultaneously see what texts you can access with your KB membership, without first having to go to the KB site.
